The other common wind related failure at gable ends is uplift of the roof decking at the overhang. We will protect shade the west windows with cedar awnings grates. Inadequate nailing of the sheathing to supporting framing or inadequate connections of the framing at the rake edge that supports the roof. I reshingle this past year and pulled out old r14 insulation and retaped as many as visually possible areas of vapour barrier leaks cuts in material etc.

Extending a gable roof can be tricky since it involves working on the roof but you may be able to do it yourself if you only need to add 1 2 2 inches 1 3 5 1 cm. With the west east overhangs the main use is siding window protection and keeping rain snow from foundation. The biggest problems with gable end overhang strength occur if your roof overhang is greater than about 12 inches. Also note that a new fully adhered membrane is installed on the original roof deck replacing the one installed 17 years ago is folded down to catch the top edge of the wall water control layer.
